The financial element of the Government’s Green Deal initiative is now up and running. In September last year we reported that, although the assessment part of the scheme was active, funding would not be available until 2013. Today, the DECC said it believed hundreds more households than expected had already signed up to the scheme. However, recent reports quoted the number of actual assessments undertaken as still being in single figures.
Whilst the Government believes that the Green Deal will stimulate the UK green economy and create jobs, as well as providing people with more energy efficient homes, some campaigners believe that the Green Deal is not accessible enough to stave off potential widespread fuel poverty as energy costs continue to rise. Only as uptake statistics are released will we be able to assess whether UK home owners have embraced this latest initiative to reduce the UK’s carbon footprint.
